Annan says progress on achieving development goals has been uneven

Khalid Malik, the UN Resident Coordinator and UN Development Programme’s Resident Representative in China, delivered Mr. Annan’s message on the opening day of the two-day conference in Zhuhai, China.In his message to the conference, Mr. Annan said the eight MDGs “are not just wishful thinking. They are certainly ambitious, but they are also technically feasible, even in the relatively short time ahead.”The MDGs include commitments to halving extreme poverty, to stopping the spread of HIV/AIDS and to protecting the environment from degradation.Mr. Annan described the conference as an opportunity to forge the kind of partnerships between governments, the private sector and civil society groups that are necessary to produce sustainable development and real change for the world’s poor. read more
