By Dialogo December 27, 2012 The peace negotiations carried out by the Colombian government and the FARC guerrillas in Cuba for a month, were making slow progress, said president Juan Manuel Santos in an interview with the daily El Tiempo, on December 23. “They are moving forward slowly, but they are still moving forward,” Santos said, even though he was optimistic that the Colombian 2013 Christmas will be celebrated in peace. “If there is good will (on FARC’s side), next Christmas will be celebrated in peace, with this conflict already settled,” Santos said. The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and Santos government agreed a negotiating agenda comprising of five points, and since the talks started on November 19, they are still dealing with the first topic: the agrarian one. Santos has set November 2013 as the deadline for a final agreement to end the violent armed conflict that has affected the nation for almost 50 years with the FARC, the oldest Latin American insurgency. In his declarations, the president said that if negotiations fail, “the alternative is to continue under fire for several years, as we have been for the last 50 years.” On December 21, both parties concluded the second round of talks in Havana, which will resume on January 14.
