first_imgWest Florida and Weaver Win Big in First Game Against West Georgia March 31, 2007 Box Score  PENSACOLA, Fla. – West Florida (28-10, 4-3 GSC) came out swinging in the opening game of a three game series against Gulf South Conference rival West Georgia (19-13, 1-3 GSC) scoring seven run in the first three innings at Pelican Park on the UWF Campus. The early seven run lead is all Argonauts starting pitcher Jonathan Weaver needed as he struck out a career high 11 batters in a complete game effort.West Georgia threatened to score early in the game after the Wolves lead off hitter A.J. Renfrow opened the game with a triple that hit off the right field wall. However, Weaver (Molino, Fla./ Tate HS) struck out the next two batters and got the Wolves clean up hitter to ground out ending the threat.West Florida took advantage of the good pitching by Weaver scoring three run in the bottom half of the first. Following a lead off walk to Peter Antoske (Olmsted Township, Ohio/ St. Edwards HS), Kyle DeBos (Panama City, Fla./ Gulf Coast CC) singled through the right side of the infield placing runners on the corners. Antoske would scored on a wild pitch and DeBos would touch home on an RBI single to left field by Bo Williams (Ocala, Fla./ Pensacola Junior College). Williams scored the final run of the inning on a Jon Reed (Chesterfield, Va./ University of Virginia-Wise) ground out to short stop.The Argonauts padded their lead with a pair of runs in second inning making the score 5-0 in favor of West Florida. Jason Kohl (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/ Pensacola Junior College) led off the inning with a line drive single back up the middle. Kohl would reach third with good heads up bases running and would score the first run of the inning on a sacrifice bunt by DeBos, who reached safely when the Wolves third baseman attempted to get Kohl out at home. DeBos would score on a two-out single by Clay Wallace (Bay Minette, Ala./ Faulkner State CC).West Florida extended their lead to 7-0 with a two-run third inning. Reed opened the inning with a walk and Lee Huggins (Bay Minette, Ala./ Faulkner State CC) singled to right field. Both runners would advance one base a ground out and would score on single to left field by Kohl.West Georgia scored their only run of the game in the fourth inning. Jason Parker led off the inning with a stand up double to the left center field gap. The Argonauts had a chance to cut down Parker at third base but a throwing error by Wallace allowed the Wolves catcher to reach third safely. Parker would score on a ground out to second.The Argonauts added three insurance runs in the seventh and eighth inning extended West Florida’s lead to 9-1. In the seventh, Justin Wood (Pensacola, Fla./ West Florida HS) singled to center to start the Argonauts rally. Pinch runner Kyle Brown (Gulf Breeze, Fla./ Gulf Breeze HS) would score on a single by reigning GSC Player of the Week Huggins. In the eighth, Kohl lead off the inning with a double to left center and would score when the next hitter Antoske singled. Kyle Andrews (Fort Walton Beach, Fla./ Fort Walton Beach HS ) who reached on a fielders choice scored the final run of the game on a single up the middle off the bat of Logan Hundley (Gulf Breeze, Fla./ Jefferson Davis Community College).In only his third start of the season Weaver (4-0) tossed his first complete game of the year surrendering only one unearned run. He gave up only six hits, no walks and struck out 11. His 11 strike outs were five better then his previous record of six, which he tossed three times last year.Despite the deteriorating weather the second game of the double header is scheduled to being 30 minutes following the end of the first game.
