‘Agreeing to Ozil’s contract demands could cost Wenger his job’, talkSPORT told

first_imgArsene Wenger could lose his job if he gives into Mesut Ozil’s contract demands and extends the Germany playmaker’s Arsenal deal. That is the view of former Chelsea and Ireland striker Tony Cascarino, who co-hosted talkSPORT with Jim White on Tuesday.Cascarino feels Ozil would not be wanted by any other top club in England or Europe, and has done nothing to earn a new deal to extend his stay at the Emirates – especially not one worth the reported £250,000-a-week he is demanding. The 28-year-old currently takes home £140,000 on a weekly basis, and Wenger has made it clear he wants to keep Ozil in north London with his existing contract expiring at the end of next season. If a new deal is not agreed by the summer, there is a good chance Ozil could be sold, to ensure the Gunners do not lose him for free in 2018.Club officials are said to not be keen on breaking their wage system just to tie Ozil down on a bumper contract few believe he deserves, but Wenger has final say and could agree to the deal. However, Cascarino believes the Frenchman’s job could be on the line if he gives into Ozil’s demands. He said: “Do you think any of the top clubs in England are looking at Mesut Ozil and thinking ‘yeah, we’ll have a bit of him. We’ll take him for a quarter of a million a week.’?“Absolutely no chance.“He’s on the fringes of the game too often – and that’s being polite to him.“People say laziness. I see a player who really looks like he’s doing Arsenal a favour being there – and he’s not.“If you said to me tomorrow, ‘give him £100,000-a-week, sign him on a three or four-year deal’, I’d say ‘get rid of him!’“Don’t even offer what’s on the table – take it away.“And if Arsene Wenger agrees to that contract, I think that could cost him his job as well.”last_img
