talkSPORT told: ‘Rooney has so much to offer, but he needs to change his game’

first_imgWayne Rooney should not leave for China as he still has ‘so much to offer’, according to former Manchester United midfielder Ray Wilkins. Many have suggested Rooney’s cameo in Wednesday’s Europa League final may have been his last ever appearance for the Red Devils, after a glorious 13 year career during which time he won every available club honour and became United’s all-time record goalscorer.Despite his successes at Old Trafford, the 31-year-old’s star has been waning in recent months, and this season has been a tough one for the England captain. He started only 15 Premier League games under Jose Mourinho, and his lack of game time at club level has seen him dropped from Gareth Southgate’s most recent England squad for the matches against Scotland and France.Rooney admitted he has received offers to leave Manchester this summer, from both England and abroad, and many believe he could make a move to the lucrative Chinese Super League to see out the final years of his career. However, Wilkins does NOT feel he should depart these shores as Rooney is still good enough to perform at the highest level. There is a caveat to Wilkins’ statement, though; if Rooney is to remain at his best, he must stick to being a striker – rather than running around the pitch like a madman as has so often been the case for the former Everton youngster.Speaking as co-hose of the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, Wilkins said: “I wouldn’t like to see him go to China. I still think he’s got so much to offer… I really do.“I just wish that when Wayne is picked as a forward player he just stays up the pitch and doesn’t work his socks off to come back and help people.“[Zlatan] Ibrahimovic this year had got 28 goals for Manchester United before his unfortunate injury. But what does he do? He plays in his area. When the ball’s in his area, Ibrahimovic comes alive.“I’d love to see him [Rooney] just play upfront – when the ball’s in his area, just play.“I still think he’s got so much to offer.”last_img
