We look forward to having him back with the team as we get ready to start the season.” Rantanen formed possibly the best line in all of hockey last year alongside Nathan MacKinnon and Gabriel Landeskog and the winger might have been the best player out of those three at times. He scored 31 goals and added 56 assists as the Avalanche made the playoffs for the second straight year and lost to the Sharks in the second round in a controversial seven-game series. With the regular season just days away, it looked like Rantanen could go into the season without a deal, but like Patrik Laine of the Jets and Mitch Marner of the Maple Leafs, he came up with a contract just in time.last_img read more

The WRC, although acting independently of USD 353, is technically part of the school system’s umbrella.By a 4-2 vote, the school board took the recommendations of the WRC board and appointed Barton, currently serving on the board, and Zeka, who will be replacing Amy Jenkins.Wellington board member David Peck went against the WRC board recommendations and nominated J.P. Buellesfeld for the position instead of Barton. It was seconded by Bob White.WRC board member Hankie Holefelder was in the audience and addressed the school board urging it to go with Barton due to his accounting and board experience.“We are in the middle of a building project, and Matt has been such a part of that,” Holefelder said. “Even though we are bringing Betty Kay in, we’ll have two new members coming in midstream (if going with Buellesfeld). J.P. is a wonderful person. But for right now, Matt is the person we should stick with.”Wellington board president Jackie Berryman said the WRC Board had worked hard in the nomination process and that it should go with its recommendations.“We still have the power to appoint whomever we want to,” Peck said. “We still have a motion on the floor.”The motion failed 5-2. Board member Angie Ratcliff then nominated Barton. That motion passed 5-2.•••••New hirings: There were no resignations at USD 353 for this month.New hirings are as follows:•Sarah Garcia: Title 1 teacher at Lincoln Elementary.•Sara Osborne: WHS Physical Science.•Samantha Gandy: Eisenhower Special Education teacher.Zane Aguilar transferred from Roosevelt Education Center to kindergarten and first grade physical education for Lincoln and Eisenhower Elementary schools.•••••In other board news:•The board will hold a listening tour again this year. He was not in attendance Thursday so the board tabled the matter until next month. Russell Wilson credits ‘incredible force’ Jadeveon Clowney after wildest game of career

first_imgRussell Wilson credited a starring performance from Jadeveon Clowney after the Seattle Seahawks defeated the San Francisco 49ers in a game he described as the “craziest” of his NFL career. The Seahawks won a thrilling contest on the road against their NFC West rivals 27-24 as time expired in overtime courtesy of a 42-yard field goal from Jason Myers. A chaotic Monday Night Football encounter saw the two teams combine for seven turnovers, while Chase McLaughlin missed a 47-yard kick that would have given the 49ers victory.Wilson and his team-mates could barely believe what had transpired as they moved to 8-2 and handed the Niners (8-1) a first defeat of the season. But the exploits of Clowney, who produced a season-high 12 pressures including five QB hits, a sack and a forced fumble, were central to Wilson’s thoughts. MORE: Three takeaways from the Seahawks’ win in OT thrillerThe former Houston Texans star, who joined the Seahawks in an August trade, also had a defensive touchdown.”Clowney was playing lights out — that’s why we got him,” the MVP candidate Wilson said. “The plays he was making were incredible. He has been a force throughout his whole career and to have him on our football team is great. He was talking it up on the sidelines and focused. We were all together and he was one of the main leaders in that.”Of the Hawks’ victory, he added: “That was the craziest game I’ve ever been a part of. It felt like an NFC championship game right there. Just back and forth, back and forth, two great teams going after it.””Probably the craziest game I’ve ever played in.” – @DangeRussWilson #SEAvsSF pic.twitter.com/Qs6fzMOFGU— NFL (@NFL) November 12, 2019MORE: Did Geno Smith say “heads” or “tails” in OT coin flip decision? Clowney himself explained Seattle’s defensive line had been keen to make a point after taking criticism in the first half of the season, while the Niners’ unit, led by Nick Bosa, had received rave reviews. He said: “Up front we’ve been getting hammered all season long about this front not playing well. We needed to do a little something different. All week long I said in my head, ‘We’ve got to out-do their D-line’. If you ain’t competing, you need to retire. It’s all about competing at the end of the day and I don’t want to be outperformed by anybody.”And he echoed Wilson by adding: “There was so much going on. This was the craziest game of my career, hands down.”Beat a division rival.Improve to 8-2.Win back-to-back OT games. What a night for the @Seahawks! #Seahawks pic.twitter.com/B1UwKjJSaZ— NFL (@NFL) November 12, 2019last_img read more

How much do Yankees owe Jacoby Ellsbury after release?

first_imgThe Yankees also designated first baseman/DH Greg Bird and left-hander Nestor Cortes Jr. for assignment.Bird, 27, struggled with multiple injuries, as well, but he was a left-handed power source when healthy and playing. He hit 32 home runs in 700 plate appearances over four seasons (2015, 2017-19) and homered three more times in the 2017 playoffs.Cortes, 24, was best known for being the semi-regular “bulk” reliever after opener Chad Green last season. The Yankees on Wednesday released outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury, who had not played for the club since the 2017 American League playoffs.Ellsbury, 36, had been sidelined by assorted lower-body injuries. He is due $21.1 million in 2020, and the Yankees held a $21 million option for 2021 with a $5 million buyout, meaning he will receive about $26.1 million overall from the team. New York signed Ellsbury to a seven-year, $153 million contract in December 2013. SN’s MLB FA RANKINGS: Rendon, Cole lead the listNew York released Ellsbury just before the 8 p.m. ET deadline for MLB teams to protect minor league players from the Rule 5 draft in December. Ellsbury’s release cleared a spot on the Yankees’ 40-man roster for one of the seven prospects the team added Wednesday. Ellsbury produced just 8.1 fWAR (9.9 bWAR) during his Yankees tenure, led by a 3.6 tally in 2014, his first season with the club. He put up 9.5 fWAR for the Red Sox in 2011, a season that turned out to be an extreme outlier. His 32 home runs, 39 stolen bases and 150 wRC+ that year made him a free-agent prize two winters later, even though he missed about half of the 2012 season in Boston with a shoulder injury. Ellsbury’s physical problems with the Yankees began in 2015 when he was sidelined by a knee sprain. He suffered a concussion in 2017, and then an oblique strain helped cost him the 2018 campaign. He sat out the 2019 season to recover from hip surgery and subsequent setbacks. He averaged 130 games played for the Bombers from 2014-17.RIVERA: What I learned sitting in a car with Joe TorreNew York’s outfield now consists of Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, an injured Aaron Hicks, Mike Tauchman, Clint Frazier and prospect Estevan Florial. The Yankees reportedly are interested in re-signing free agent Brett Gardner. last_img read more

Bradley Beal ‘pissed off’ at NBA All-Star snub

first_imgBradley Beal could not hide his anger over being snubbed in the NBA All-Star selection process. The two-time All-Star was overlooked as the reserve list was revealed Thursday. The Wizards guard joined Suns star Devin Booker as a notable absentee. When asked about the matter following the Wizards’ 121-107 win over the Hornets, Beal did not hold back.NBA ALL-STARS: Full list of starters, reserves for 2020 game”I’m a little pissed off about it,” he told NBC Sports Washington. “I know how I am, [so] I was kind of expecting it, honestly.”It’s disrespectful, but the real ones know [I’m an All-Star]. I’ll just keep competing. I’m going to try to get my team in the playoffs for sure.”Beal’s agent, Mark Bartelstein, jumped to Beal’s defense, citing the player’s loyalty to the Wizards after he signed a new deal before the season.”It’s just very frustrating and disappointing for a guy to put up historic numbers, and he made the conscious decision this summer to stay the course and to play his heart out with great leadership to build something in Washington, as opposed to jumping ship to take an easier path,” Bartelstein told ESPN. The statistics show Beal has a strong case to have been included, with his average of 28.7 points per game putting him sixth overall. He beat that average against the Hornets, putting up 34 points, with nine rebounds and nine assists. Beal’s fiancee, Kamiah Adams, cited those stats in an angry appearance on the Wizards’ postgame show Thursday. She also took offense at Hawks guard Trae Young being an All-Star selection.”It’s a joke to me. Not taking away from [Young’s] game. I’ve been watching him since he was in AAU when Brad’s AAU team used to play against him, but he’s playing cherry-picking basketball,” Adams said, per a transcript tweeted by The Athletic.last_img read more

Banged-up Bucks made ‘right call’ to sit starters against Nuggets

first_imgEric Bledsoe is also dealing with an injury, but Milwaukee coach Mike Budenholzer did not play Khris Middleton, Donte DiVincenzo, Marvin Williams or Brook Lopez at all against the Nuggets. With a playoff spot already secured and a healthy lead over the Raptors at the top of the Eastern Conference, Korver — who scored 23 points — understood why the decision was made to manage minutes for key players.”Different guys are banged up,” Korver told the media. “We’ve got a good home stretch coming up here and we want to get right. Guys have nicks and knacks and you take care of it. We’ve got some important games coming up, so it was definitely the right call.” Kyle Korver insisted the Bucks made the right call in resting some of their starters despite slipping to a third successive loss on Monday.Giannis Antetokounmpo missed the 109-95 defeat to the Nuggets as he is sidelined with a minor knee sprain, his status to be evaluated again ahead of this week’s home game with the Celtics. I thought we needed a lot of energy tonight going against a good Denver team. We were right there. This group put us right where we wanted to be. We just weren’t quite able to get it done.”At some point, you go with the kind of freshest bodies in certain situations. Those other guys are good, available and I told them to be ready. But we went with the group we did because we thought that was the best thing tonight.”last_img read more
